Hungarian PM Viktor Orbán Publicly Votes Against Ukraine’s EU Membership in National Survey

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has publicly voted against Ukraine’s accession to the European Union as part of a nationwide consultation launched by his government.
In a post published on his official Facebook page on April 22, Orban shared a photo of his completed ballot, marking the option against supporting Ukraine’s EU membership.
The Hungarian government has been conducting a public survey on several European policy issues, including the future of Ukraine in the bloc.
“Brussels and the Tisza Party support Ukraine’s EU accession. This would destroy the Hungarian economy. We won’t let them decide our future over our heads. I’ve already voted,” Orban wrote in the post accompanying the image.

The Hungarian government has distributed letters along with the ballots, urging citizens to reject Ukraine’s membership bid. The letters claim that Ukraine’s potential accession would have a negative impact on Hungarian citizens and cause significant economic harm to the country.
The vote is part of Orban’s broader campaign to push back against EU initiatives he considers harmful to Hungary’s national interests. While non-binding, the consultation is likely to shape Budapest’s stance in upcoming EU discussions on Ukraine’s accession process.
Earlier in March, six Northern European countries — Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia — urged the EU to fast-track Ukraine’s accession, calling for concrete proposals from the European Commission.
In a joint letter obtained by Politico, the diplomats warned that Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s continued opposition should not be allowed to stall the process.
