Hungary’s FM Szijjártó Responds to Poland’s Decision to Exclude Hungarian Ambassador From EU Presidency Ceremony
Poland, now presiding over the European Union Council for the next six months, made a notable diplomatic decision by not inviting Hungary’s ambassador to the official handover ceremony. This decision has drawn sharp criticism from Hungary’s Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó.
According to Zoltán Kovács, spokesperson for the Hungarian government, Szijjártó described the exclusion as “regrettable and childish.” The remarks highlighted Hungary’s dissatisfaction with the Polish government’s move, which came shortly after Hungary concluded its six-month presidency of the EU Council in December 2024.
The exclusion of the Hungarian ambassador coincided with a controversial issue involving Budapest’s decision to grant asylum to Marcin Romanowski, a former Polish Deputy Minister of Justice. Romanowski, who previously represented Poland’s Law and Justice party, is currently under investigation in Poland.
Poland’s Deputy Minister for European Affairs, Magdalena Sobkowiak-Czarnecka, commented on the matter, stating that the decision to exclude Hungary was directly linked to Budapest’s actions regarding Romanowski.
Following Hungary’s tenure in the second half of 2024, Poland assumed the EU Council presidency on January 1, 2025. Denmark is set to take over in the second half of the year.
