Iran targeted the US-UK base on Diego Garcia with what was described as a two-stage ballistic missile with an estimated 4,000-kilometer range, according to Army Recognition on March 22.

The report, citing remarks by the IDF  chief of staff, framed the launch as the longest-range strike attempt yet attributed to Iran and a possible sign that Tehran can reach far beyond its previously declared 2,000-kilometer missile limit.

Army Recognition noted that Diego Garcia is a critical hub for US bomber operations and Indo-Pacific logistics, making the attempted strike strategically significant.

Army Recognition assessed that the missile may have been linked to the Khorramshahr-4, though it stressed that no official confirmation had been provided.

The outlet noted that Iran officially describes the system as having a 2,000-kilometer range, but argued that its payload capacity, propulsion, and possible modified configuration could enable a much longer range, potentially placing targets across Europe and the Indian Ocean within range.

The source also pointed to the IDF chief’s reference to a “two-stage” missile, which, if confirmed, would mark a notable departure from known Khorramshahr variants.

The report concluded that the attempted strike on Diego Garcia could force the United States and its allies to reassess missile defense, force dispersion, and the protection of high-value bases in multiple theaters.

The reported strike has also revived wider concerns about how far Iran’s missile reach may now extend beyond the Middle East.

Iran is expanding its missile and drone arsenal, which analysts believe has pushed a direct security threat from the Middle East into Europe.

Liquid-fueled systems, including the Khorramshahr, Sejjil, Ghadr, and Emad, can reach about 2,000 kilometers, with the Khorramshahr potentially stretching to 3,000 under a lighter payload.

From launch positions in northwestern Iran, which already place Greece, Bulgaria, Romania, Ukraine, and Moldova inside the strike envelope, a longer-range Khorramshahr could reach Berlin and Rome.
