Iran launched a missile strike against an Italian military base in Erbil, in northeastern Iraq, Italy’s Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said on March 12.

“Fortunately, our servicemen are safe and were protected in a bunker. I express my solidarity with them and my gratitude for their daily service,” Tajani said.

Italy’s Ministry of Defense confirmed that about 300 Italian troops are currently stationed at Camp Singara in Erbil, located in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. Their mission primarily focuses on training Kurdish security forces.

Authorities have not yet identified the type of missile used in the attack, though early assessments suggest it may have been a ballistic missile.

A similar incident occurred two days earlier, on the night of March 10, when Iranian ballistic missiles targeted a German military camp at Al-Azraq Air Base in Jordan.

In that case, soldiers were able to reach shelters in time, preventing casualties.

Earlier, reports emerged that Russia provided Iran with drone warfare tactics developed during the war against Ukraine, helping Iranian forces improve their ability to penetrate air defense systems in the Middle East.
