Iran’s Shahed Drone That Hit UK Base Includes Russian Kometa-M Technology

Fragments of an Iranian-made Shahed-136 drone that targeted the British Royal Air Force (RAF) base at Akrotiri, Cyprus, contained a Russian-made “Kometa-M” signal receiver.

According to reports from Clash Report on March 3, the discovery points to a deepening exchange of military technology between Tehran and Moscow.
The “Kometa-M” is a specialized digital antenna array (CRPA) designed to protect satellite navigation signals from electronic warfare and jamming.

According to Clash Report, the specific hardware recovered from the Cyprus crash site is identical to components found in Russian missiles and loitering munitions currently deployed in Ukraine.
Experts cited by the outlet noted that markings on the equipment suggest the system’s production may have occurred outside of the Russian Federation, potentially indicating a complex international supply chain or localized manufacturing in Iran.
As Clash Report noted: “The Russian Kometa-M jam-resistant receiver was reportedly found in the wreckage of an Iranian Shahed-136 drone that targeted the British Akrotiri airbase in Cyprus.”
The presence of Russian electronic components in Iranian hardware suggests a “reverse transfer” of technology. While Iran has historically supplied Russia with thousands of Shahed-series drones for its invasion of Ukraine, this incident indicates that Moscow is now integrating its own advanced electronic warfare components back into Iranian-assembled platforms.
The attack on RAF Akrotiri occurred on March 1. According to The Guardian, while the base sustained “minor damage,” there were no casualties reported. In response to the escalation, Greece deployed F-16 fighter jets and frigates to Cyprus on March 2 to bolster the island’s air defenses.
The drone strike on the British base occurred amid a massive regional escalation following coordinated military operations by the United States and Israel on February 28.
These operations, titled “Epic Fury” and “Lion’s Roar,” targeted Iranian infrastructure and high-ranking leadership. Key developments following the strikes include the reported deaths of 48 senior Iranian officials, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and the commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
