Kim Jong Un Unveils New Nuclear and Military Strategy in Major Policy Shift

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has announced that Pyongyang will introduce a new defense strategy focused on the parallel development of nuclear capabilities and conventional armed forces.
According to the state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), Kim delivered the remarks during a leadership meeting of the Workers’ Party of Korea and later confirmed the same approach while visiting a military research center. He stated that the new policy will be presented at the upcoming ninth Party Congress.
Kim emphasized that the nuclear arsenal will remain “the central pillar of deterrence,” but also underlined the need to strengthen land, naval, and air forces to counter “any challenges from enemies.”

KCNA reported that the leader instructed military officials to prepare a detailed modernization plan, including the development of new weapons, improvements in command systems, and enhanced troop training.
During his visit to the research facility, Kim observed tests of new active and passive protection systems for armored vehicles. He said the revised strategy is intended to ensure that the state is prepared for “any external threats.”
Analysts noted that the announcement signals Pyongyang’s intention to reinforce both its nuclear shield and conventional forces, which could allow the country to act with greater flexibility in the region. International observers expect the United States, South Korea, and Japan to issue responses in the coming days.
Earlier, North Korea unveiled a new automated missile plant during Kim Jong Un’s visit, with state media highlighting fully automated assembly lines and plans to expand production—raising concerns that more KN-23 missiles could be supplied to Russia for strikes on Ukraine.
