According to the Telegraph, the Kursk offensive advances three key Ukrainian objectives.

"After more than two years of being subjected to Russian military aggression, Ukraine is on the offensive,” states the publication on August 8.

On the 6th of August, the Governor of Russia’s Kursk Region, Alexey Smirnov, has declared a state of emergency due to Ukrainian forces reportedly entering the region.

The offensive in Kursk appears to be intensifying as Ukrainian forces reportedly took control of Sudzhna, reached the outskirts of Korenevo, and advanced to Malaya Loknya overnight. In less than 48 hours, Ukraine has gained more territory than during the entire summer 2023 counter-offensive, according to The Telegraph.

Ukraine’s General Staff has not commented on the alleged Kursk operation.

The Telegraph states that “the Kursk offensive advances three key Ukrainian objectives”:

  1. The offensive impacts Russian operations in Donetsk, where Russian forces have recently taken gain. The advances are part of Russia’s strategy to consolidate control over Toretsk’s logistical centers. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has acknowledged the challenging situation along the Eastern Front. The Kursk offensive complicates Russia’s efforts to reallocate forces to Donetsk.

  2. Additionally, the offensive aims to create internal discord within Russia. Pro-Ukrainian Russian partisans have made incursions into Russian territory, including in Belgorod and Kursk, to disrupt Russia’s sense of security and demonstrate that the war can reach them.

  3. The operation also serves to strengthen Ukraine’s bargaining position for future negotiations. Leaked documents suggest that Ukraine is considering a land swap deal, possibly trading Kharkiv for Kursk. While the ability to hold Kursk is uncertain, the offensive has highlighted that penetrating Russian territory may be less challenging than breaching fortified positions in eastern Ukraine.

“The Kursk offensive shows that Russia has not learnt its lessons from the Wagner Group’s lightning seizure of Rostov during its June 2023 mutiny. Aside from predictable threats of annihilating Ukraine and using tactical nuclear weapons, Russia has not responded meaningfully to the Kursk offensive. With F-16 jets also arriving on the frontlines, Putin has plenty of reasons to worry,” concludes The Telegraph.
