Latvia completed the construction of physical barriers along its border with Russia, bringing the total length of fortified fencing to 280 kilometers, according to a statement released on December 29 by the state-owned company Valsts Nekustamie Ipasumi, which oversaw the project.

Latvian Minister of the Interior Rihards Kozlovskis emphasized the strategic significance of the development, stating, “The process of equipping the border with high-tech surveillance systems is ongoing. Our ultimate goal is to establish the most modern border service along the EU’s eastern frontier.”

In addition to the barrier, the Latvian government continues to develop broader border infrastructure, including patrol roads.

Construction of pontoon pathways is scheduled to begin in spring 2026 in swampy areas near Lake Pitel, where traditional access is limited.

This follows the earlier completion of barriers on Latvia’s border with Belarus in July 2024, which spanned approximately 145 kilometers.

Previously, it was reported that Latvia will assess whether to remove railway tracks leading into Russia from its eastern border, with the government to prepare an initial evaluation by the end of the year in coordination with the National Armed Forces and Baltic partners.
