Lavrov Sets Preconditions for Putin–Zelenskyy Meeting, Citing Russia’s “Security Concerns”

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated that Russia is “not refusing” any form of work regarding the Ukrainian settlement, whether bilateral or trilateral. However, he added that “any contacts involving top leaders must be prepared very carefully,” according to a report made by RBC.UA on August 19.
In his comments, Lavrov emphasized that no agreements to end the war would be possible unless Russia’s “security concerns” and the “rights of Russians in Ukraine” were respected.

Previously, in a rare admission, Lavrov acknowledged that Russia is currently fighting the war in Ukraine without any allies, a situation the country has never faced before in its history.
Speaking at the “Territory of Meaning” forum, Lavrov described Russia’s current international position as one of isolation, The Moscow Times reports.
In the past, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had stated that Ukraine will not cede its territory to Russia and will adhere to the provisions of the country’s Constitution when addressing territorial issues.
Speaking in a video address, Zelenskyy said the Ukrainian Constitution already contains the answer to the territorial question, and that “no one will step back from this.” He emphasized that Ukrainians “will not give their land to the occupier.”
