China President Xi Jinping pledged to deepen mutual support with Russia across multilateral forums, following Donald Trump’s threat to impose 100 percent tariffs on any country still trading with Moscow if no Ukraine peace deal is reached within 50 days, as was reported by The Telegraph on July 15.

Chinese president met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and declared that “trust between China and Russia has deepened,” urging both capitals to “set a model for a new type of international relations” capable of withstanding external pressure.

US president Trump’s announcement on July 14 proposed sweeping duties on Russia’s trading partners—including China—unless Russian leader Vladimir Putin signs a ceasefire agreement by September 2.

Analysts warn that such measures may drive Moscow and Beijing into an even closer strategic embrace, while doing little to alter Russia’s conduct given the relatively small volume of bilateral trade.

Although China maintains official neutrality in the Russia–Ukraine war, Foreign Minister Qin Gang has signalled privately that Beijing cannot afford a Russian defeat, fearing that a post-Ukraine focus of US policy would shift to countering China itself.

Earlier, it was reported that Dmitry Medvedev dismissed the threat as a “showy ultimatum” unlikely to sway Moscow, posting on his English-language X account that “Russia didn’t care.”

He also characterized the proposed 50-day deadline for a Ukraine ceasefire as arbitrary.
