Legendary Ukrainian Boxer Wladimir Klitschko Eyes Historic Comeback to Break Heavyweight Record
Wladimir Klitschko, the legendary Ukrainian boxer and former world heavyweight champion, has expressed intentions to return to professional boxing, aiming to become the oldest heavyweight champion in history. This was revealed by his long-time manager, Tom Loeffler, in an interview with ESNEWS on January 19.
In an interview, Loeffler confirmed Klitschko’s ambition to compete for a championship belt. “Wladimir said he would fight for the title to break George Foreman’s record. He is 48 years old now and will turn 49 in March. If anyone can do it, it’s Wladimir,” Loeffler stated, adding that Klitschko will not face Oleksandr Usyk but might revisit unresolved matters with Tyson Fury.
However, Fury recently announced his retirement from boxing on January 13, following a second consecutive defeat to Oleksandr Usyk in their December rematch, leaving the situation uncertain.
Klitschko, known as “Dr. Steelhammer,” last fought in April 2017, losing to Anthony Joshua by technical knockout. This followed a loss to Tyson Fury in 2015, after which plans for a rematch fell through when Fury vacated his titles.
Klitschko’s potential comeback has garnered interest from major promoters, including Turki Al-Sheikh, head of the General Entertainment Authority of Saudi Arabia, who expressed willingness to organize a high-profile bout with substantial financial incentives.
There is speculation that Klitschko could challenge IBF titleholder Daniel Dubois, who is currently preparing for a fight against Joseph Parker on February 22. Dubois has not ruled out the possibility of a bout with Klitschko, should the Ukrainian legend return to the sport.
If successful in reclaiming a championship title, Klitschko would surpass George Foreman, who became the oldest heavyweight champion at age 45 by defeating Michael Moorer in 1994.
