Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda announced that Russian military aircraft violated NATO member Lithuania’s airspace on Monday evening, calling the incident a “blatant breach of international law and territorial integrity,” he wrote in a post on X on October 23.

“This is yet another reminder of the importance of strengthening European air defense readiness,” Nausėda wrote, emphasizing the need for greater regional security coordination in response to growing Russian provocations.

Nausėda stated that the Lithuanian Foreign Ministry will summon representatives of the Russian Embassy to formally protest what he described as “reckless and dangerous behavior.”

The incursion marks the latest in a series of airspace violations by Russian forces in the Baltic region.

Previously, it was reported that Lithuanian Defense Minister, Dovilė Šakalienė, has called on NATO countries to take a more serious approach in response to Russia’s airspace provocations, suggesting that military targets from Russia crossing NATO borders should be shot down.

Earlier, it was stated that a Russian MI-8 helicopter entered Estonian airspace near Vaindloo Island and remained there for about four minutes.

Estonia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the Russian chargé d’affaires to protest a violation of its airspace.
