French President Emmanuel Macron dismissed the idea of Russian leader Vladimir Putin acting as a mediator between Israel and Iran, stating that Moscow lacks the credibility and legitimacy required for such a role, The Times of Israel reported on June 15.

Speaking during a visit to Greenland, Macron directly countered a suggestion made by US President Donald Trump, who floated the possibility of Putin serving as a go-between in efforts to de-escalate tensions between Tehran and Jerusalem.

“I do not believe that Russia, which is currently involved in a high-intensity war and has for several years failed to comply with the UN Charter, can act as a mediator,” Macron said.

His remarks underscore growing European skepticism about Russia’s role in global diplomacy, especially as Moscow remains deeply embroiled in its full-scale war against Ukraine and continues to face international condemnation over human rights violations and breaches of international law.

Earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned that Israeli strikes on Iran had driven global oil prices higher, bolstered Russian revenues and defense capabilities, and risked slowing Western aid for Ukraine, and he vowed to press the United States for new price caps and sanctions while assessing Tehran’s weapons production.
