In an interview for RT on June 9, Vladimir Medinsky, aide to Russian leader Vladimir Putin and Russia’s lead negotiator, reported that Russian citizens are calling for immediate missile strikes on Kyiv and Lviv using the “Oreshnik” missile system in retaliation for what they view as terrorist attacks on Russian soil.

“Indeed, our population, our citizens demand much harsher actions from us. Of course, after this, citizens demand: we need to strike Kyiv and Lviv with Oreshnik, enough negotiations,” he stated.

Medinsky noted that “the outrage over the recent attacks has weighed heavily on the Russian delegation in Istanbul, the diplomats found it difficult to travel to the second round of talks because everyone understood that what had occurred was terrorism on Kyiv’s part.”

Medinsky is likely referring to Operation Spiderweb, which took place on June 1, when the Security Service of Ukraine launched a covert drone attack on five Long-Range Aviation airbases deep within Russia.

The Oreshnik, a ballistic missile variant of Russia's RS-26, first drew attention on November 21, 2024, when it was launched by Russia towards the city of Dnipro in east of Ukraine.

Weighing 40 tons and featuring six independent reentry vehicles, the missile was initially misidentified as a nuclear-capable intercontinental ballistic missile, raising alarm over its potential for massive destruction.

Earlier on June 2, Russia’s lead negotiator Vladimir Medinsky dismissed Ukraine’s call to return deported children with a mocking remark, saying, “Don’t put on a show for bleeding-heart European old ladies.”
