Merz Warns US Senators on Russia’s Military Buildup: “They Have No Idea What’s Happening”

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz believes that some American lawmakers do not fully grasp the scale of Russia's rearmament campaign. Merz made this statement at an event hosted by the Association of Family Entrepreneurs in Berlin, as reported by Reuters on June 6.
Merz spoke just a day after his meeting with US President Donald Trump at the White House.
"I met with some senators on Capitol Hill and told them to please look at the rearmament Russia is doing," Merz stated. "They clearly have no idea what is happening there right now," he added, without naming the senators he had spoken with.
Since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Russia has switched its defense factories to round-the-clock operations and arranged arms supplies with North Korea and Iran, Reuters noted.
This has led European officials to warn that Moscow could soon be capable of attacking NATO territory. Russia, however, denies any such intentions.

Merz is the latest European leader to visit Trump in hopes of convincing him to continue supporting Ukraine and strengthening European security through NATO. Merz said he was reassured by Trump’s words, particularly his "decisive no" when asked whether the US planned to withdraw from NATO.
Merz also supported Trump's call for NATO members to commit to more than doubling their defense spending to 5% of GDP. Trump welcomed this pledge on June 5 and told Merz that US troops would remain in Germany.
"Whether we like it or not," Merz stated on Friday, "we will remain dependent on the United States... for a long time to come."
Earlier on June 5th, US President Donald Trump met with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz in the Oval Office to discuss ways to jointly address the Russia’s war against Ukraine and strengthen cooperation between the United States and Germany.
