“America Once Ended a War in Europe”: Merz Urges US to Act on Ukraine Ahead of D-Day Anniversary

On June 5th, US President Donald Trump met with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz in the Oval Office to discuss ways to jointly address the Russia’s war against Ukraine and strengthen cooperation between the United States and Germany.
Chancellor Merz began by referencing the significance of the next day’s anniversary: “Tomorrow is June 6th, D-Day, when the Americans once ended a war in Europe. It’s a day that reminds us of the strong bond between our countries and the sacrifices made for freedom.”
President Trump responded, “That was not a pleasant day for you.”
Merz replied, “No, it was not. But in the long run, it was the liberation of my country from Nazi dictatorship. That history shapes our commitment today.”
“We know what we owe you,” the chancellor added. “But this is the reason why I’m saying that America is, once again, in a very strong position to do something about this war—and to help end it.”

Turning to current challenges, Merz emphasized, “We in Europe are ready to support and increase pressure on Russia to find a peaceful solution.”
“We owe a great deal to the sacrifices made during World War II, and that shared history calls on us to act decisively now for peace and security,” Merz concluded.
Earlier, Trump indicated during a joint appearance with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz that he has a personal timeline in mind for potentially imposing sanctions on Russia as the war in Ukraine continues without resolution.
