Moldova Warns Its Citizens in Russia of Risk of Being Drafted Under New Military Law

Moldova’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued a warning to Moldovan citizens currently in Russia regarding recent legislative changes that could obligate foreign nationals to enter into contracts with the Russian armed forces.

The information was reported by the Moldovan outlet Point on December 15.

Under a decree signed by Russian leader Vladimir Putin in November, certain categories of foreign nationals applying for residence permits or Russian citizenship may be required to sign a military service contract. As an alternative, applicants may be asked to submit documentation confirming their unfitness for military service.

The Moldovan Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted that despite statements from Russian authorities about the decree’s “special conditions,” the practical scope and manner of its enforcement remain unclear.

Earlier, Moldovan officials moved to bring the fuel storage facility at Chișinău International Airport back under state control, citing concerns over national security. The facility had been operated by Russia’s Lukoil since 2005.
