Moscow Fears That Killings of Iranian Leaders Risk Becoming Accepted Practice

The Kremlin voiced concern that the killings of Iranian leaders during a US-Israeli operation could have far-reaching consequences and risk becoming normalized, according to Ukrainska Pravda on March 22.
Ukrainian outlet, citing Russian news agency RBC, reported that Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov addressed the issue as tensions around Iran continued to draw responses from Moscow.
Peskov framed the deaths as a development with implications beyond the immediate military operation.

“This is indeed the reality in which we live, but let us hope that this is not the norm,” Peskov stated. “And in any case, this is not the norm – it has had and will continue to have profound repercussions. This cannot remain without consequences.”
He noted that the episode reflected the current international reality but warned that it should not be treated as an accepted pattern.
His remarks also pointed to the prospect of wider fallout from the killings, though he did not specify what form those consequences could take.
Ukrainska Pravda noted that the comments came after Iran International reported on March 3 that the country’s Assembly of Experts had elected a new Supreme Leader following the killing of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in a US military operation, naming his son Mojtaba Khamenei as successor.

The remarks also coincided with reports that the targeting of Iranian leaders had heightened security concerns around the Russian leader, Vladimir Putin.
The reported shift away from the Kremlin points to heightened security concerns around Putin after claims that surveillance cameras may have been used to track senior Iranian figures.
The reports have not been independently verified, and there has been no clear public acknowledgment from the Kremlin explaining any such change in Putin’s movements.
