Municipal workers in Moscow have been assigned to monitor the skies for drones using binoculars, as Russian authorities tighten security measures ahead of the Victory Day celebrations on May 9.

According to Russian media outlet ASTRA, employees of Moscow’s municipal maintenance service “Zhilishchnik” have been instructed to climb onto rooftops and watch for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), following a wave of recent drone attacks targeting the capital.

A worker from southern Moscow told reporters that site supervisors received binoculars and were sent to residential building rooftops to observe the airspace.

“Everyone else has also been told to look at the sky and search for drones,” the employee said. However, he admitted there were no clear instructions on what to do in case a UAV is spotted, suggesting the default response would be to call emergency services at 112.

In the eastern part of the city, another employee reported increased coordination with police and the deployment of anti-drone units in attics.

“We’ve been working overtime for three days. There are joint patrols with law enforcement. Binoculars were distributed to janitors as well,” the source said, adding that the heightened alert would remain in place through May 9.

On the night of May 6–7, Ukrainian drone strikes triggered the closure of multiple Moscow airports, including Vnukovo, the main hub for incoming foreign delegations. Russian authorities claimed 447 drones and missiles were launched, targeting airbases, weapons plants, and critical defense infrastructure deep inside Russian territory.
