Mystery Jet Drone From Quantum Systems and Airbus May Hold Strike Role for Ukraine

A newly revealed jet-powered target drone developed by Quantum Systems in cooperation with Airbus Defence and Space may hold broader relevance for Ukraine than previously understood, according to analysis highlighted by Defense Express on February 18.
The German drone manufacturer Quantum Systems, which maintains close cooperation with Ukraine, publicly introduced the RAT (Red Air Target) jet target drone during the Munich Security Conference held February 16–18.

German outlet Hartpunkt indicates the system moved from initial concept to first flight in just six weeks—an unusually fast development timeline for an aerospace platform.
Key advantages highlighted by the company include:
low projected cost (exact price undisclosed);
ability to manufacture in large quantities;
planned availability for orders by early summer, at the end of the second quarter.

Although designed primarily as a target drone, Airbus intends to use the RAT platform for “cost-effective software testing and CCA integration”—a reference to collaborative combat aircraft, often described as loyal wingman–type unmanned fighters.
Analysts cited by Defense Express note the choice is notable because Airbus already fields its own target drones, suggesting RAT may offer distinct technical advantages, possibly linked to its MOSAIC control system and software architecture.
Technical specifications remain concealed. The RAT drone is catapult-launched and powered by a jet engine capable of speeds up to roughly 450 km/h.
Today we are at the first German-Ukrainian joint venture — which is already producing drones for the Ukrainian Army. Today I received the first jointly made attack drone. We saw the production line and the first flight of the drone. This is modern Ukrainian technology.… pic.twitter.com/cGeXBOXkYw

However, Defense Express highlights an additional detail. Visually similar drone—painted in Ukrainian Air Force markings—was displayed during a demonstration for a Ukrainian delegation at the first German-Ukrainian joint UAV production venture, Quantum Frontline Industries.
This raises the possibility that a warhead-equipped variant may have been developed specifically for Ukrainian needs.
If confirmed, the RAT platform could evolve from a target drone into a mid-range strike unmanned system, though it remains unclear whether Ukrainian forces have already received such a capability or are still awaiting delivery.
Earlier, reports emerged that European defense technology company STARK was expanding its footprint in Ukraine with the launch of a new research and development (R&D) hub that could accelerate the delivery of advanced unmanned systems to the battlefield.
