The North Atlantic Treaty Organization  is actively reviewing plans to further reinforce its missile defense capabilities in Türkiye.

These potential enhancements aim to counteract increasing threats emerging from neighboring Iran, according to Bloomberg on March 16.

Currently, the Alliance has already deployed a missile defense battery in eastern Türkiye. This initial step was taken specifically to safeguard a critical early warning radar installation tasked with monitoring missile activities across the Middle East.

NATO is now seriously contemplating the deployment of an additional Patriot missile defense system to strengthen defenses around an air base currently hosting US troops.

Intelligence suggests the American AN/TPY-2 radar stationed near Kurecik in eastern Türkiye, a key early warning sensor situated closest to Iran, likely served as a primary target for at least one of the missiles launched.

Another highly vulnerable location is the Incirlik Air Base in southern Türkiye, which accommodates significant NATO personnel, including several hundred US service members.

Reaffirming the Alliance’s proactive stance, a NATO official emphasized that “NATO will continue to adapt to threats.”

Detailing specific options under consideration, one source noted that the Alliance might deploy a PAC-3 missile battery to Incirlik. For over a decade, this strategic air base has relied on a Spanish-operated PAC-2 interceptor system for defense.

Underscoring the urgency of these potential reinforcements, NATO’s air and missile defense forces operating in the eastern Mediterranean have successfully intercepted three Iranian-launched missiles.

Significantly, one of these intercepts occurred directly over the Incirlik Air Base this past Friday.

On March 9, 2026, NATO air and missile defense forces intercepted a second Iranian ballistic missile over Türkiye, preventing it from reaching allied territory, according to Türkiye’s Ministry of National Defense.

The missile was launched from Iranian territory and entered Turkish airspace before being engaged by NATO missile defense systems operating in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Fragments from the intercepted munition fell on unoccupied land in the southeastern province of Gaziantep, causing no casualties or injuries.
