NATO Intercepts Second Iranian Missile After It Enters Turkish Airspace

NATO air and missile defense forces intercepted a second Iranian ballistic missile over Türkiye on March 9, preventing it from reaching allied territory, according to Türkiye’s Ministry of National Defense.

The missile was launched from Iranian territory and entered Turkish airspace before being engaged by NATO missile defense systems operating in the Eastern Mediterranean. The interception took place before the projectile could reach its intended destination.

Türkiye’s Ministry of National Defense confirmed the incident in an official statement, noting that fragments from the intercepted munition fell on unoccupied land in the southeastern province of Gaziantep.

“Some debris from the munition fell onto vacant land in Gaziantep. There have been no casualties or injuries,” the ministry said in its statement.

According to Turkish officials, NATO maintains a layered air and missile defense presence in the Eastern Mediterranean capable of detecting and engaging ballistic missile threats originating from the Middle East. The Turkish government did not disclose which specific missile defense system was used during the interception.

Local authorities confirmed that debris from the intercept fell in the Gaziantep region. Turkish security services secured the site, and officials reported that the incident caused no casualties or damage.

The March 9 interception follows a similar event earlier in the month. According to Turkish officials, on March 4 a ballistic missile launched from Iran was detected shortly after launch and tracked across Iraqi and Syrian airspace before being intercepted by a US naval vessel using an SM-3 interceptor missile.

Earlier, Azerbaijan temporarily closed part of its southern airspace for 12 hours after four Iranian drones crossed the country’s border, according to The Times of Israel on March 5. The restriction was issued through a NOTAM alert for pilots and airlines and was linked to the reported drone incursion, as well as strikes that allegedly targeted Nakhchivan International Airport in Azerbaijan’s exclave.
