NATO Strengthens Air Defense in the Black Sea Region, Says Mark Rutte
NATO is reinforcing its air defense systems in the Black Sea region in response to increasing threats. According to NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, the Alliance is committed to safeguarding its members, with a particular focus on addressing security challenges in this strategically vital area.
Speaking at a joint press conference with Romanian Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu, Rutte emphasized the significance of a robust air defense infrastructure, citing the ongoing war in Ukraine as a catalyst for this priority. “Repeated intrusions of Russian drones and missiles into NATO airspace are reckless, dangerous, and unacceptable,” he stated.
Rutte highlighted that NATO has already bolstered its air defense capabilities along its eastern borders. This includes integrating fifth-generation fighter aircraft into the arsenals of member states. "NATO takes the security of the Black Sea region very seriously. We are ready to assist, defend, and protect every member of the Alliance,” he said.
Earlier, fragments of Russian drones have been discovered in Romania, particularly near the Danube River, following strikes on Ukrainian port infrastructure. To enhance monitoring, NATO deployed an additional AWACS (Airborne Warning and Control System) aircraft to Romania in late September.
