New Ukraine-Britain Defense Road Map Targets Air Defense, Long-Range Weapons, and Sea Protection

Ukraine and Britain signed a road map in Kyiv on Friday to develop a century-long defense partnership and set out key areas of defense cooperation for 2026, according to Ukrainian Defense Minister Denys Shmyhal in a statement on January 9.
Shmyhal stated that he signed the document alongside British Defense Secretary John Healey, calling it an important step toward implementing large-scale projects made possible by the century partnership agreement between Ukraine and Britain. He said he thanked Healey for visiting Kyiv.

He also added that he and representatives of Ukraine’s intelligence services and General Staff briefed Healey on the consequences of a large-scale Russian combined strike overnight, adding that strengthening air defenses and supplying ammunition for those systems was a top priority.
He said Britain had already made a significant contribution to Ukraine’s ability to repel what he described as Russian terror.

He said Ukraine would scale up production of Octopus interceptor drones to 1,000 a month starting in February, and that the two sides separately discussed joint strategic industrial projects in air defense and long-range weapons, prospects for localizing production of Swedish Gripen aircraft that include technologies from British companies, steps to strengthen protection of Ukraine’s sea, and preparations for a “Ramstein” meeting scheduled for February.
Earlier, it was reported that Ukraine and the UK agreed to co-produce thousands of Octopus-100 interceptor drones in the UK under a defense-industrial cooperation framework.
