North Korea Confirms Troop Deployment to Ukraine, Threatens Force If US Challenges Russia

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has defended his country’s involvement in Russia’s war in Ukraine, calling it a legitimate act of solidarity with a “brother nation,” according to Reuters on May 10, citing KCNA.
“Our participation in the conflict was just, and it falls within the sovereign rights of our Republic,” Kim said. “I consider all the brave soldiers who participated in the Kursk operation to be heroes and the highest representatives of the nation’s honor.”
Kim also warned that Pyongyang would not hesitate to authorize the use of military force if the United States continues what he described as military provocations against Russia.

North Korea only officially confirmed on April 28 that it had sent troops to support Russia’s war against Ukraine.
On December 14, 2024, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that Russia had deployed North Korean soldiers for the first time to attack Ukrainian positions in Russia’s Kursk region.
On May 5, it was reported that North Korea has sent approximately 15,000 labor migrants to Russia, many of whom likely entered the country on student visas.
