North Korea Pledges “Unconditional” Support for Russia, Including on War in Ukraine
North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un vowed “unconditional support” for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine during talks with fellow dictator Vladimir Putin in Pyongyang, as reported by Bloomberg.
Kim praised Putin’s foresightedness and determination in forming what he called the most powerful treaty in North Korea-Russia relations.
Putin highlighted the significance of their new agreement, stating, “Today we have prepared a new fundamental document that will form the basis of our relations for the long term. We highly appreciate your consistent and unwavering support for Russian policy, including in the Ukrainian direction.” The meeting culminated in the signing of a mutual-defense pact, rekindling Cold War-era ties and elevating their relationship to official alliance status.
The treaty includes provisions for mutual military aid, raising concerns for the US and its allies about increased regional military tensions and potential global implications. Analysts warn that the pact reinforces Russia’s role in Asia and could escalate provocations from Moscow and Pyongyang.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken criticized Russia’s efforts to bolster relations with countries capable of supporting its aggression in Ukraine. Blinken highlighted North Korea’s alleged provision of substantial military supplies to Moscow, with Russia purportedly providing technology to enhance North Korea’s military capabilities in return.
During the visit, both leaders emphasized strengthened economic, political, and military cooperation. Putin’s trip follows Kim’s earlier visit to Russia, which saw a significant increase in arms transfers to North Korea.
Following the talks in North Korea, Vladimir Putin has travelled to Vietnam on an official visit.
