Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said he expects Western sanctions on Russia to be lifted by 2027, arguing that the war in Ukraine could end by then and that EU energy restrictions are harmful to Hungary, RBC.ua reported, citing Orbán’s statement during his annual summary press conference on January 5.

Orbán said he anticipates a “balanced new situation” between Russia and Ukraine emerging by 2027, which he believes would lead to the removal of sanctions.

“We hope that by 2027 the current military situation will end, a balanced new situation between Russia and Ukraine will be established, and as a result the sanctions will be lifted,” he said.

Orbán again criticized the European Union’s plans to phase out Russian oil and gas imports, claiming the measures would be especially damaging for Hungary. He also threatened legal action against the European Commission, saying Budapest plans to sue over what he described as an “abuse of the legal framework,” according to RBC.ua.

Orbán argued that sanctions should be treated as trade decisions requiring unanimous approval by EU member states.

The comments come as the EU moves ahead with its energy decoupling from Russia. On December 17, the European Parliament backed a plan to gradually end purchases of Russian gas by the end of 2027.

Under the proposal, imports of Russian liquefied natural gas would be banned once new regulations take effect in early 2026, while pipeline gas imports would be phased out by September 30, 2027.

Previously, it was reported that Viktor Orbán went to Moscow for talks with Russian leader Vladimir Putin focused on securing Hungary’s crude oil and natural gas supplies, as well as discussing possible avenues for peace in Ukraine.
