On August 14, a video emerged of more than a hundred Russian soldiers, who made the decision to surrender to the Ukrainian Armed Forces in the Kursk region.

In total, the Security Service of Ukraine captured 102 servicemen from the 488th Guards Motorized Rifle Regiment of the Russian Armed Forces and Kadyrov’s “Akhmat” battalion.

This represents the largest single capture since the onset of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

“This surrender reflects the growing challenges faced by Russian troops, who are often left under the command of tyrants and criminals, with unreliable support from forces like Kadyrov’s militants—known for abandoning their comrades to avoid capture,” the statement of the “I Want to Live” project of the Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War reads.

The statement also emphasized that Russian General Aleksandr Lapin’s strategic missteps have contributed to the recent gains by Ukrainian forces. Lapin was in charge of the Kharkiv direction in 2022, when the Ukrainian Armed Forces conducted a successful counter-offensive campaign, deoccupying the Kharkiv region.

On August 12, Zelenskyy officially stated that Ukraine is conducting an operation in the Kursk region of Russia. According to the latest data, Ukraine was controlling 74 settlements, about 1,000 km² of the territory of the Russian Federation. Zelenskyy has also stated that hundreds of Russian soldiers surrendered to Ukrainian forces.
