Russia has reportedly dismantled a Pakistani spy network run by the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) that sought to steal air defense and military aviation technology, according to Economic Times report on November 10.

Russian counterintelligence services arrested a Russian national in St. Petersburg accused of attempting to smuggle documents related to military helicopter development and air defense systems. The materials included data on Mi-8AMTSh-V and its Arctic variant, Mi-8AMTSh-VA—upgraded versions of the Russian Mi-8 transport and assault helicopter.

Sources told Economic Times that the attempted espionage marks one of the first known ISI operations of its kind in Russia. It reportedly followed a separate effort, dubbed Operation Sindoor, in which the ISI allegedly tried to obtain classified information about advanced Russian-made air defense systems.

The S-400 surface-to-air missile system, a key focus of such efforts, has been described as a “game changer” for India’s defense capabilities. India, which already operates several S-400 units, plans to acquire five additional systems from Moscow, Economic Times wrote.

The Mi-8AMTSh-V and its Arctic variant remain central to Russia’s military transport fleet, with specialized equipment for extreme conditions and long-range missions.

Russian authorities have not publicly commented on the alleged ISI network, but the case underscores growing espionage concerns involving third countries seeking access to Moscow’s defense technologies.

Previously, it was reported that families of Indian nationals who were deceived into fighting for Russia in its war against Ukraine gathered in New Delhi, calling on authorities to bring their relatives home and hold those responsible for the recruitment scheme accountable.
