Poland Deploys Troops, Border Guards to Build New Fence on Belarus Border
Poland is set to start building a new four-meter fence along part of its border with Belarus in the coming days after severe winter weather delayed the project, according to RMF24 on March 11.
The barrier is to be built in the Podlaskie region near a technical road along the frontier. RMF24 noted that military engineering units have already arrived at border guard bases, where they are reviewing plans with officers and preparing storage sites for construction materials.

RMF24 informed that 2,300 borderland guards are directly involved in the operation in Podlaskie, including the Lithuanian section, alongside more than 5,000 soldiers.
The new barrier will consist of a four-meter mesh fence mounted on posts and reinforced with guy wires.
Two coils of barbed wire will be placed on top of the fence, with two more behind it. A separate two-meter fence will also be installed to protect wild animals from injury.
“To get over these four meters, more time is needed. Then we have more time to reach that place,” Podlaskie border guard commander Sławomir Klekotka told RMF24.

Border guard and military officials indicated that the scale and goals of the operation on the Belarusian frontier remain unchanged, even though illegal crossing attempts have fallen sharply since the start of the year.
According to the report, border authorities believe the decline was linked to the season and an exceptionally cold winter, and expect another wave of attempted crossings in spring, which they describe as controlled by the Alexander Lukashenko regime.
Similar barriers have already been built by Lithuania and Latvia. Lithuania completed its fence along the Belarusian border in August 2022, while Latvia finished construction in December 2025.

Poland has also started installing an anti-drone system along its border with Belarus, adding new surveillance and interception capabilities as Warsaw continues to fortify the frontier against what it describes as hybrid threats.
Officials said the deployment is part of a broader border-security package that includes additional sensors, barriers, and rapid-response units, aimed at deterring provocations and better protecting critical infrastructure near the frontier.
The change comes amid heightened concerns about cross-border incidents and coordinated pressure tactics linked to Belarus, with Poland framing the system as a preventive measure to reduce risks from unmanned aircraft and other disruptive activity.
