Poland Eyes MiG-29 Transfer to Ukraine, Exploring Drone and Missile Tech Compensation

Poland and Ukraine are negotiating the potential transfer of Poland’s remaining MiG-29 fighter jets to the Ukrainian Air Force. The General Staff of the Polish Armed Forces confirmed the negotiations on December 10.
The potential transfer is being considered because the aircraft have reached the end of their service life and are no longer seen as viable for modernization within the Polish Air Force.
The General Staff emphasized that no final decision has been made, but the move would align with NATO’s broader strategy to reinforce its eastern flank and support Ukraine. Poland plans to replace the retired MiG-29s with more modern F-16 and FA-50 aircraft.

Alongside discussions about the fighter jets, negotiations are underway on compensation mechanisms: Ukraine may provide Poland with certain drone and missile-system technologies. The aim of this cooperation is not only to compensate Poland for the transfer of equipment but also to enhance joint defense capabilities and expand industrial cooperation.
Talks on transferring Poland’s remaining MiG-29s to Ukraine began back in July 2024.
As of 2025, the Polish military still operates 11 MiG-29A fighters and 3 MiG-29UB training-combat aircraft—a total of 14 jets. These aircraft remain active within the Polish Air Force.

Earlier, Ukraine’s F-16 fighter jets were spotted equipped with advanced targeting pods that allow the integration of laser-guided weapons—including the US-made APKWS II precision rocket system, which enables far more cost-effective engagements against drones. A photo of the upgraded jet was published by the Telegram channel Avia OFN on December 4.
