Poland Scrambles Fighter Jets as Russia Targets Ukrainian Cities Near Border

In the early hours of July 9, Poland launched fighter jets for patrol in response to a massive Russian missile attack targeting the Ukrainian cities of Lutsk and Zhytomyr—just across the border.
According to a statement from the Operational Command of the Polish Armed Forces, published via X on July 9, the decision was made shortly after 3 a.m. local time, when Russian missiles were detected heading toward western Ukraine. Polish and allied aircraft began operating in national airspace as part of a coordinated defense posture.
“In line with standing procedures, all available forces and resources under the Operational Commander were activated. Alert fighter pairs were scrambled, and ground-based air defense and radar systems were placed on the highest level of readiness,” the Command reported.

By around 6 a.m., the Polish military announced that the threat level had decreased and the air operation was winding down.
“The Polish Armed Forces continue to closely monitor the situation in Ukraine and remain at high readiness to ensure the security of Polish airspace,” the statement read.

This is not the first time Poland has taken such action. On June 9, Polish and allied aircraft were also deployed in response to another wave of Russian missile strikes on Ukrainian territory.
Just weeks earlier, on May 26, Poland scrambled jets again as Russia launched missiles from strategic bombers, prompting heightened alert levels across the region.
Previously, in its largest air assault since the start of the full-scale invasion, Russia unleashed an unprecedented 741 aerial weapons on Ukraine overnight—the highest number of airborne threats recorded in a single 24-hour period.
