Poland’s Minister of Digital Affairs, Krzysztof Gawkowski, has raised concerns about Russian intelligence operations aimed at recruiting Polish citizens to destabilize the country ahead of its presidential elections.

Speaking to RMF FM Gawkowski outlined the potential threats posed by Russian efforts to exploit individuals within Poland, particularly to disseminate disinformation online.

“Russian intelligence services have begun searching for Poles to contribute to destabilizing the situation in the country. I urge everyone to avoid actions that could harm their own nation,” Gawkowski stated.

The minister emphasized the importance of vigilance against the growing risks of cyberwarfare in Europe, highlighting that any engagement with foreign intelligence is a serious offense under Polish law.

“I want to remind everyone that engaging in any form of relations with foreign intelligence constitutes a violation of Article 130 of the Penal Code and is punishable by imprisonment. Even minimal involvement with Russian intelligence agencies qualifies as espionage,” he warned.

Gawkowski further revealed that since January, Russian military intelligence has intensified efforts to target Polish citizens. “We are observing information in cyberspace, particularly on the Darknet, about offers from APT groups or other entities associated with Russia. These offers are specifically designed to enlist Poles for actions against their own state, including financial compensation for such activities,” he explained.

The minister announced plans to introduce a comprehensive strategy to safeguard the electoral process in cyberspace, underscoring the need for proactive measures to protect the integrity of the upcoming elections.
