President Trump Will Not Attend Russia-Ukraine Talks in Türkiye, US Official Confirms

US President Donald Trump will not attend the upcoming Russia-Ukraine peace talks scheduled in Türkiye, a senior US official confirmed on May 14.
The negotiations are set to take place in Istanbul on May 15, with the Russia’s delegation led by Vladimir Medinsky, Assistant to the President of the Russian Federation, according to an official order signed by Russian leader Vladimir Putin on May 14. Putin himself will not be present at the negotiations.
Negotiations in Istanbul in 2022 reportedly brought Ukraine and Russia close to a draft agreement that included Ukraine’s non-accession to NATO, reductions in its armed forces, and security guarantees from the US, UK, France, China, and Russia, according to a leaked document published by US media.
Earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy rejected claims that a 2022 decision by Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council legally prevents him from holding direct negotiations with Vladimir Putin.
Speaking at a May 13 press briefing in Kyiv, Zelenskyy characterized these claims as part of a Russian disinformation campaign.
