Putin: “Oreshnik” Missile Strike Could Rival Nuclear Weapon in Power
Russian leader Vladimir Putin discussed the capabilities of the Oreshnik missile, which Russia launched on the city of Dnipro in Ukraine last week.
This was reported by Russian media, citing Putin’s speech at the CSTO summit in Astana.
Putin stated that the system is capable of targeting even highly fortified and deeply buried facilities. He added that mass deployment of such missiles in a single strike would deliver power comparable to a nuclear strike.
The leader added that the General Staff and the Ministry of Defense of Russia are currently selecting targets in Ukraine for strikes using the Oreshnik.
Putin continued to emphasize that Russia's hypersonic missile systems have no global equivalents, with their production capacity steadily increasing.
According to TASS, Putin explained that the Oreshnik" system features ten independently targeted warheads that strike at a speed of Mach 10. Anything at the epicenter of the blast, he claimed, is reduced to dust.
"There is no equivalent to Russia's Oreshnik globally, and it won't appear anytime soon," Putin declared.
Additionally, Putin reiterated that Russia has repeatedly warned that strikes using Western long-range weapons would constitute NATO's direct involvement in the war. He also compared Russia’s "Iskander" system to all three modifications of the ATACMS missiles, asserting that the Russian system has a greater range and superior characteristics compared to the new American missiles.
On November 24, 2024, the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) revealed fragments of the newly developed Russian Oreshnik missile, which Moscow used to strike the city of Dnipro on November 21.
