Russian leader Vladimir Putin has rejected the possibility of a 30-day ceasefire unless the West halts its arms deliveries to Ukraine. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov made the statement in an interview with ABC News published on May 10.

According to Peskov, Putin had initially supported the proposed 30-day truce, but the Kremlin now considers it unfeasible under current conditions. Peskov claimed that a ceasefire cannot be implemented while “Russian troops are advancing in quite a confident way.”

He added that any pause in fighting should include a complete suspension of Western arms supplies, including those from the United States and European countries.

“It will be an advantage for Ukraine. Ukraine will continue their total mobilisation, bringing new troops to the front line. Ukraine will use this period to train new military personnel and to give rest to their existing ones. So, why should we grant such an advantage to Ukraine?” Peskov said.

Additionally, Peskov claimed that Putin is “doing whatever is possible to solve the problem, to achieve a settlement through peaceful and diplomatic means.” However, in the absence of such avenues, he said, Moscow “has to continue military operation.”

On April 26, US President Donald Trump suggested that Putin may not be interested in ending the war in Ukraine, following his meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Rome.

“With all of that being said, there was no reason for Putin to be shooting missiles into civilian areas, cities and towns, over the last few days. It makes me think that maybe he doesn’t want to stop the war, he’s just tapping me along, and has to be dealt with differently, through ‘Banking’ or ‘Secondary Sanctions’? Too many people are dying!!!” Trump wrote.
