French carmaker Renault is preparing to begin production of drones for Ukraine, but some employees have voiced opposition, arguing they “did not sign up to make weapons.” The resistance has raised questions about potential Russian influence on French trade unions.

According to Defense Express on August 20, French media reported that the General Confederation of Labour (CGT) said workers were asking whether they could refuse such tasks.

Managers also acknowledged unease among staff, citing Renault’s multinational workforce where Ukrainians and Russians often work side by side.

Although Renault has previously been involved in military production through its subsidiary Renault Trucks Defense, unions argue that this was during times when France itself was at war. A possible compromise under discussion would shift drone production to the company’s plant in Slovenia, avoiding direct involvement of French employees.

According to Defense Express, the CGT maintains close ties with French left-wing parties known for pro-Russian positions, including La France Insoumise, led by Jean-Luc Mélenchon. The outlet also noted historical parallels, pointing to union-led strikes and production sabotage in 1939 during the Soviet–German pact.

Despite union objections, Renault is likely to proceed with drone production given the French state’s position as its largest shareholder. The situation highlights broader concerns about Russian interference in European domestic politics.

Earlier, Opex360 reported that France accelerated development of unmanned ground vehicles after observing Ukraine’s use of robotic systems on the battlefield, with the Aurochs 4×4 emerging as the country’s lead platform since its first trials in 2023.
