As Kyiv prepared for the first day of school, Russian forces launched a massive missile attack early on September 2, striking the city with around 20 cruise and ballistic missiles.

On the early morning of September 2, as families in Kyiv were preparing for the first day of school, Russian forces attacked Kyiv using a combination of cruise and ballistic missiles. Approximately 20 missiles of various types were launched in total.

Preliminary reports indicate that three people were injured.

The Russian military targeted Kyiv with a coordinated missile assault involving both cruise and ballistic missiles. Around 3 am, Tu-95MS strategic bombers launched cruise missiles, likely X-101s, from the Saratov region in Russia. Alongside these, Korean KN-24/Iskander-M ballistic missiles and an additional strike drone were deployed over Kyiv and its suburbs.

According to the Kyiv Military Administration, the city’s anti-aircraft defenses successfully intercepted and destroyed more than a dozen cruise missiles, about a dozen ballistic missiles, and one strike drone.

Debris from the interceptions fell in the Holosiivskyi, Svyatoshynskyi, Dniprovskyi, and Shevchenkivskyi districts.

In the Svyatoshynskyi district, four cars caught fire, and the blaze was extinguished. A warehouse was also set on fire, with firefighters extinguishing the flames over an area of 700 m². Another fire was put out at the entrance of the Sviatoshyn metro station.

In the Holosiivskyi district, debris struck the boiler house of an educational institution, resulting in a fire that was successfully extinguished.

In the Shevchenkivskyi district, a fire covering an area of 400 m² was extinguished, and debris is being cleared from the site.

According to Kyiv’s mayor of Kyiv, Vitali Klychko, as of 06:25, two adults have sought medical assistance, with one person hospitalized.

In total, the radio engineering forces of the Air Force of Ukraine detected and tracked 58 air targets, including 35 missiles of various types and 23 attack UAVs. The breakdown of the detected threats is as follows:

- 16 “Iskander-M"/KN-23 ballistic missiles launched from the Bryansk, Voronezh, and Kursk regions of the Russian Federation.

- 14 Kh-101 cruise missiles fired from Tu-95MS aircraft operating in the airspace of the Volgograd region, Russian Federation.

- 4 S-300/S-400 anti-aircraft guided missiles launched from the Belgorod region, Russian Federation.

- 1 missile of unknown type from the Belgorod region, Russian Federation.

- 23 Shahed-131/136 strike UAVs launched from Primorsko-Akhtarsk, Russian Federation.

The anti-aircraft missile units, the Air Force’s radio-electronic warfare, and mobile fire groups of the Defense Forces of Ukraine, intercepted and shot down the following targets:

- 9 “Iskander-M"/KN-23 ballistic missiles.

- 13 Kh-101 cruise missiles.

- 20 Shahed-131/136 attack UAVs.
