Russia Just Bombed an American Company in Ukraine—and Spilled 300 Tons of Oil Across a City

A Russian drone strike on a US-owned oil plant in Dnipro has triggered a massive spill of 300 tons of oil onto city streets, marking the latest in a series of attacks on American business assets in Ukraine.
On January 5, a Russian drone strike on the Ukrainian city of Dnipro resulted in significant damage to an oil processing facility owned by the US-based company Bunge, causing a spill of approximately 300 tons of oil onto major roadways. City officials estimate the spill will disrupt traffic for several days.
According to statement by Dnipro Mayor Borys Filatov on Telegram, the strike targeted a facility belonging to Bunge, an agribusiness headquartered in St. Louis, Missouri.

“Russians bombed AMERICAN property,” Filatov wrote, emphasizing the ownership of the affected facility. He added that the resulting spill has made the city’s embankment roads impassable for an estimated 2–3 days, despite ongoing cleanup efforts.
“Putin’s attacks on American businesses and American interests in Ukraine show his complete disregard for peace efforts led by President Donald Trump,” Andrii Sybiha, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine wrote in a post on X.
“This is why it is so urgent to advance the peace process —and Ukraine is ready to move it forward—as well as to strengthen Ukraine’s air defense and increase sanctions pressure,” he stated.

Local emergency services have been spreading sand and absorbent mixtures to contain the spill. In addition to the oil release, the attack triggered a fire at the site and damaged several vehicles and a nearby power line, according to the regional military administration.

Acting head of the Dnipropetrovsk Regional Military Administration, Vladyslav Haivanenko, confirmed that no casualties had been reported.
Bunge is one of several international companies operating in the region, and its presence has played a key role in Ukraine’s agricultural export economy.

This is not the first time US business in Ukraine has been targeted by Russian strikes. Earlier in August, a Russian missile strike hit a Flex factory in Mukachevo, western Ukraine, damaging one of the largest US business investments in the region.
According to the American Chamber of Commerce in Ukraine, the attack was seen as a direct strike on American business interests. Flex confirmed several injuries, with six people hospitalized, and emphasized that the facility only manufactures civilian goods like coffee machines.
In June 2025, a Russian missile strike also caused significant damage to an office building used by US-based aerospace company Boeing in Kyiv. The building was among several commercial sites hit during the large aerial assaults on the capital.
Boeing, which has operated in Ukraine for years in partnership with aircraft manufacturer Antonov, confirmed that no staff were injured and that business operations continued uninterrupted.
