Russia Recruiting 30,000 Troops Monthly to Sustain War Effort, Says NATO Official
A senior NATO official outlined the ongoing challenges in Ukraine’s defense against Russia, emphasizing Moscow’s sustained numerical advantage in munitions, manpower, and equipment.
Speaking on the sidelines of the NATO Foreign Ministers meeting on December 3, the official highlighted the recruitment of approximately 30,000 new personnel per month by Russia, enabling it to offset substantial losses on the battlefield, according to UNITED24 Media sources.
“Russia continues to absorb significant losses while attempting to deplete Ukrainian forces,” the official stated. However, Russia currently lacks the maneuver units required for large-scale offensives, and its commanders face difficulties coordinating joint operations and maintaining morale.
The official also noted the intensification of Russian airstrikes across Ukraine, primarily targeting critical infrastructure such as power plants.
These attacks are expected to evolve, with Russia likely adapting missile and drone tactics to challenge Ukraine’s air defenses. This underscores the importance of continued allied support for air defense systems, essential for protecting civilians and infrastructure.
Regarding Ukraine’s most pressing needs, the official identified two key priorities: personnel rotation and air defense systems. “Ensuring an effective rotation of soldiers to the front lines is critical,” the official said, adding that air defenses remain vital given Russia’s strategic focus on weakening these systems to enable further strikes on critical infrastructure.
Earlier, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte emphasized that stronger military support for Ukraine enhances its position in any future negotiations with Russia.
Speaking before the NATO Foreign Ministers meeting on December 3, Rutte reaffirmed NATO's commitment to helping Ukraine defend itself, noting recent pledges of additional military aid. He also highlighted the creation of a new NATO Command in Wiesbaden to better coordinate support for Ukraine.
