Russia Restates Ultimatum on Ukrainian Territory Ahead of Trump–Putin Alaska Summit

Russia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has restated its conditions for what it calls a “settlement” with Ukraine, just days before the planned meeting between US President Donald Trump and Russian leader Vladimir Putin in Alaska on August 15.
According to Russian state media, ministry representative Aleksei Fadeyev said Moscow’s stance remains unchanged.
The demands include the withdrawal of Ukrainian forces from the occupied parts of Luhansk, Donetsk, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia regions, Ukraine’s formal refusal to join NATO, and the lifting of all Western sanctions against Russia.
Addressing speculation about a potential “territory swap,” Fadeyev said Russia’s territorial structure is “enshrined in its constitution,” referring to amendments adopted after Moscow’s unilateral and internationally unrecognized “annexations” of parts of Ukraine’s Luhansk, Donetsk, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia regions following staged referendums in occupied areas.
He implied no readiness to negotiate changes to current claims and dismissed the idea of exchanging control of parts of Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions for full control over Donetsk, underscoring that Moscow’s position on the matter is final.
Earlier, US President Donald Trump said he would seek to secure the return of “some territory” for Ukraine during his upcoming meeting with Russian leader Vladimir Putin in Alaska, suggesting possible “swaps” or “changes in land” without specifying details, and pledging to consult European leaders and speak with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy before any agreement.
