Russian leader Vladimir Putin held a phone call with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un just days before his planned meeting with US President Donald Trump in Alaska to discuss the war in Ukraine, French media outlet Le Monde reported on August 12.
During the call, Putin thanked Kim for his support of Russia’s war against Ukraine. The two leaders “exchanged views on issues of mutual interest,” the outlet reported.

According to the North Korean state-run media KCNA, North Korea’s leader pledged continued assistance to Moscow in its military campaign. “Kim Jong-un expressed firm confidence that the DPRK will always remain faithful to the spirit of the DPRK–Russia treaty and will fully support all measures taken by the Russian leadership in the future,” KCNA said.
KCNA emphasized that both countries remain committed to strengthening strategic cooperation “in all areas” under the mutual defense pact they signed in 2024.

The Kremlin confirmed the conversation and said Putin had “shared information with Kim Jong-un in the context of upcoming discussions” with Trump.
Earlier, reports emerged that Vyacheslav Volodin, chairman of Russia’s State Duma and a close ally of Vladimir Putin, will lead a parliamentary delegation to North Korea’s capital, Pyongyang, on August 14–15.
The visit is timed to the 80th anniversary of North Korea’s liberation from Japanese colonial rule by Allied forces at the end of World War II.
