Trump Aims to Secure “Some Territory” for Ukraine in Alaska Talks With Putin

US President Donald Trump said he will attempt to secure the return of “some territory” for Ukraine during his meeting with Russian leader Vladimir Putin in Alaska on Friday. This statement was made on August 11.
“Russia’s occupied a big portion of Ukraine. They occupied prime territory. We’re going to try to get some of that territory back for Ukraine,” Trump told reporters at a news conference, adding that the encounter, scheduled for the end of the week, was intended as a “feel-out meeting” to press Putin to end the war.
Trump noted that he could know “within two minutes” of meeting Putin whether progress was possible and again floated the idea of “swapping, changes in land” between Russia and Ukraine, without specifying which territories could be involved.

Kyiv has consistently rejected any notion of ceding land and has not claimed Russian territory.
The President said he would brief European leaders if Putin offered a “fair deal” and would call Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy first “out of respect.”
“I’ll call him first… I’ll call him after, and I may say, ‘lots of luck, keep fighting,’ or I may say, ‘we can make a deal,’” Trump remarked. He also stated: “The next meeting will be with Zelenskyy and Putin or with Zelenskyy, Putin, and me. I want to have a meeting set up between the two leaders.”
Earlier it was reported that US President Donald Trump and Russian leader Vladimir Putin are set to meet in Alaska on August 15, with Moscow pushing for future negotiations to take place in Russia.
