In move to bypass Western sanctions, imposed in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Russia has dispatched the conventional LNG carrier Everest Energy through the Northern Sea Route, marking the first time a non-ice-class vessel has attempted this hazardous journey. The vessel, linked to Russia’s major LNG producer Novatek, set out on this route in early September, raising concerns due to its lack of ice-breaking capabilities.

According to a report by gCaptain, Everest Energy, a 21-year-old tanker, does not hold the necessary permit from Russia’s Northern Sea Route Administration and is sailing under a suspended Palauan flag. Maritime experts have expressed concerns over the risks posed by drifting ice, especially as the vessel approaches Wrangel Island. The ship’s insurance status remains unclear.

The decision to send Everest Energy through the Arctic comes amid ongoing US sanctions, which have significantly hampered Russia’s LNG exports. With traditional shipping routes increasingly blocked by sanctions,

This marks an escalation in Russia’s efforts to circumvent restrictions, as several LNG carriers associated with the Arctic LNG 2 project have faced difficulties due to flag suspensions and U.S. sanctions. Some vessels, including Pioneer and Asya Energy, have been forced to idle in international waters or transfer cargo to floating storage units after being unable to continue their journeys.
