Trump Extends US Sanctions Against Russia for One Year
US President Donald Trump signs an executive order in the Oval Office of the White House in Washington, DC, US, on Wednesday, April 9, 2025.

US President Donald Trump has extended the national emergency and related sanctions against the Russian government for one year, originally enacted under Executive Order 14024.

A notice published in the US Federal Register confirmed the continuation of the sanctions. The statement reiterates the decision to maintain the national emergency beyond April 15, 2025, citing the ongoing Russian threat.

The national emergency was first declared on April 15, 2021, via Executive Order 14024, citing harmful foreign activities by the Russian government. These include interference in democratic elections, cyber-enabled attacks, the use of transnational corruption, the targeting of dissidents and journalists abroad, and violations of international law. Subsequent Executive Orders—14039, 14066, 14068, 14071, and 14114—expanded the scope of the emergency and introduced additional restrictive measures.

The official statement reads: “The national emergency declared in Executive Order 14024… must continue in effect beyond April 15, 2025,” citing the “unusual and extraordinary threat” to US national security, foreign policy, and economy.

Executive Order 14024 was issued by Joe Biden in April 2021 in response to actions by the Russian government deemed hostile to the United States and its allies. These measures were implemented under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act and the National Emergencies Act.

Earlier, US Senators Lindsey Graham and Richard Blumenthal introduced a bipartisan bill on April 1 to impose sweeping sanctions on Russia — and a 500% tariff on imports from countries that continue buying Russian oil, gas, or uranium — if Moscow fails to pursue lasting peace in Ukraine.

“It is our hope that in 2025, President Trump and his team will achieve what has eluded the world in the past: ending Russian aggression against Ukraine permanently and ensuring the survivability of a free and democratic Ukraine. These sanctions against Russia are at the ready and will receive overwhelming bipartisan, bicameral support if presented to the Senate and House for a vote,” the legislators stated.
