Ukrainian Drones Target Saratov Oil Refinery Processing 4.8 Million Tons of Crude Annually

Drones attacked the Saratov Oil Refinery in Russia overnight on September 8, with local residents reporting explosions and a fire at the site, according to Russian media outlet ASTRA.

Residents of Saratov and the surrounding region reported hearing explosions during the night and seeing a fire following the attack.

Saratov region Governor Roman Busargin issued a drone threat warning at around 3:30 a.m. local time and approximately an hour later confirmed that the attack had caused damage to what he described as civilian infrastructure and resulted in casualties.

According to ASTRA, based on an analysis of photographs from the scene, the drones had targeted the Saratov Oil Refinery.

The Saratov Oil Refinery, owned by Russia’s state-controlled oil company Rosneft, is one of the country’s oldest operating refineries. Industry data puts its annual crude processing capacity at approximately 7 million metric tons, although the facility processed around 4.8 million tons in 2023.

The refinery mainly processes Urals crude supplied from fields in the Saratov and Orenburg regions, producing gasoline, diesel, fuel oil, bitumen, and other petroleum products.

Located on the Volga River, the refinery serves as an important fuel supply hub for central and southern Russia. Ukrainian sources have previously said that some of its production supports Russian military logistics, including operations associated with the nearby Engels air base.

Ukraine’s long-range strikes penetrated more than 1,500 kilometers into Russia from the Ukrainian border in August, targeting critical components of the country’s military-industrial and energy infrastructure, according to Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense.

The ministry said Ukrainian forces targeted 12 major Russian oil refineries with a combined annual design capacity of around 100 million metric tons, as well as gas-processing and petrochemical plants, fuel facilities, defense industry sites, military airfields, and other logistics infrastructure.
