Kyiv endured one of the largest aerial attacks since the start of the full-scale war as Russia launched a wave of drones and missiles against Ukraine, with explosions and fires reported across at least seven districts of the capital, residential buildings hit, infrastructure damaged, and at least four people injured, the mayor of Kyiv, Vitali Klitschko reported on June 10.

Klitschko confirmed that drone debris fell in the Desnianskyi district. “Emergency services are heading to the scene,” he wrote on Telegram shortly after 2 a.m.

By 2:37 a.m., damage from falling debris had been recorded in the Desnianskyi, Shevchenkivskyi, Podilskyi, Darnytskyi, and Obolonskyi districts. Fires broke out in residential areas, and a drone fragment reportedly hit the grounds of a local school in Obolonskyi.

Later updates revealed widespread destruction:

  • In Shevchenkivskyi, a residential building caught fire, and a woman was reported injured.

  • In Darnytskyi, drone debris struck a private home, causing significant damage but no immediate fire.

  • In Obolonskyi, debris damaged multiple floors of one residential building and completely destroyed another. An office building also caught fire.

  • Fires were reported in a pharmacy and an apartment balcony in Obolonskyi, while a business center in Holosiivskyi suffered damage.

  • In Desnianskyi, falling debris set a car on fire.

  • Non-residential facilities were also damaged in Podilskyi.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy responded to the massive nighttime assault, revealing that Russian forces used 315 drones, including 250 Iranian-made Shahed drones, and seven missiles—among them two ballistic missiles believed to be of North Korean origin.

“Russian missile and Shahed strikes drown out the efforts of the United States and others around the world to force Russia into peace,” Zelenskyy said. “Today was one of the largest attacks on Kyiv. Odesa, Dnipro region, and Chernihiv region were also targeted.”

“Residential buildings and urban infrastructure were damaged. In Odesa, even a maternity hospital became a Russian target. Thirteen people were injured. Tragically, there are fatalities. My condolences to the families.”

Zelenskyy called for a unified, forceful response:

“It is vital that the response to this and other similar Russian attacks is not silence from the world, but concrete action. Action from America, which has the power to force Russia into peace. Action from Europe, which has no alternative but to be strong. Action from others around the world who called for diplomacy and an end to the war – and whom Russia has ignored. There must be strong pressure for the sake of peace.”

Among the structures hit was a building that formerly housed the UK consulate. The abandoned building caught fire after being struck by drone debris. Firefighters battled the blaze for hours. No injuries were reported, though a guard was present on the grounds during the strike.

A dog, cat, and parrot that were also inside the building at the moment of the strike all survived.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha echoed the urgency, calling for immediate and severe sanctions against Moscow in response to the strikes.

“Russians struck a maternity ward and ordinary residential buildings, killing and injuring civilians,” Sybiha wrote on X.

“Russia rejects any meaningful peace efforts and must face new, devastating sanctions. Already now. There is no more time to wait.”

He emphasized targeting Russian banks, lowering the G7 oil price cap, and secondary sanctions on third parties helping Russia bypass restrictions.

“These sanctions are not just intended to support Ukraine. They are essential to our partners. Such economic restrictions defund Russia’s war machine, which is directed not only at us, but also at them,” he said, urging additional shipments of air defense systems to Ukraine.

Earlier, a Russian drone attack damaged the administrative section of a maternity hospital in Odesa, according to city mayor Hennadii Trukhanov.

Odesa Regional Military Administration confirmed that the strike caused fires and damage to multiple civilian sites, including a maternity hospital, an emergency medical station, and residential buildings.
