Russian Drone Strike on Sumy Damages 18th-Century Holy Resurrection Cathedral

Russian forces targeted the Holy Resurrection Cathedral of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine (OCU) in Sumy with a drone, Ukrainian Pravda reported on September 11, citing Artem Kobzar, acting mayor of Sumy, and Oleg Grygorov, head of the Sumy Regional Military Administration.
“This attack on such a sacred site is further evidence of Russia’s cynical crimes against civilians and our cultural heritage,” Grygorov emphasized.

Emergency services are continuing to assess the damage at the site. Thankfully, no casualties have been reported, and no one sought medical attention following the strike.
The drone damaged the building’s facade, hitting the iron frame on the cathedral’s second floor, according to the local media outlet Kordon.Media.
The Holy Resurrection Cathedral in Sumy is the oldest stone building in the city and a national architectural landmark. It was built in the style of Cossack Baroque at the turn of the 18th century.
Though its authentic appearance has been altered over time, significant restoration efforts in the 1970s helped give the church its current form. The cathedral, built with funds from the city’s first colonels, Gerasim and Andriy Kondratyev, was consecrated in 1702, Ukrainian Pravda writes.
Previously, it was reported that Russian strikes during the night damaged the Saint Sophia Cathedral in Kyiv and the Odesa Film Studio, according to Ukraine’s Minister of Culture, Mykola Tochytskyi.
