Russian attack drones struck two foreign-flagged civilian cargo vessels near Ukraine’s Black Sea ports in the Odesa region, killing a Syrian crew member, according to Deputy Prime Minister for Restoration Oleksii Kuleba on Telegram on January 9.

Kuleba said one drone hit a Saint Kitts and Nevis-flagged ship as it was sailing toward the port of Chornomorsk to load grain within Ukraine’s maritime corridor.

He said the vessel remained seaworthy and was still underway toward the nearest port, while preliminary information indicated casualties among those on board.

A second ship, sailing under the flag of the Comoros Islands and carrying soy, was also struck near the port of Odesa. Odesa region governor Oleh Kiper reported that the second assistant to the captain was wounded and receiving medical care.

Kuleba said rescue units were dispatched and described the strikes as a “war crime,” accusing Russia of deliberately targeting civilian objects, international shipping and food logistics.

Earlier, it was reported that Russian drone strikes hit a civilian cargo ship at the port of Odesa, damaging a Lebanese‑flagged vessel used in export logistics and highlighting continued threats to international shipping in Ukraine’s maritime trade routes.
