Finland announced on January 7 that the Eagle S tanker suspected of damaging undersea cables in the Baltic Sea has been found to have significant deficiencies and will remain out of operation until necessary repairs are completed.

This was reported by Reuters, citing Finland's public transport agency’s statement.

As the police investigation continues, authorities conducted a port state inspection of the vessel and reported that they identified 32 deficiencies, including issues with fire safety, navigation equipment, and pump room ventilation.

"Operating the ship is forbidden until the deficiencies have been rectified," Director of Maritime Affairs Sanna Sonninen at Finnish Transport and Communications Agency Traficom said.

On December 26, the Finnish Coast Guard intercepted and boarded the Russian vessel Eagle S within Finnish waters following suspicions of its involvement in an attack on the Estlink 2 undersea power cable.

The vessel was detained by Finnish authorities after tracing the cable damage to Eagle S, a part of Russia’s shadow fleet , sailing under the Cook Islands flag.

NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte announced on December 27 that the alliance will increase its military presence in the Baltic Sea following the damage to undersea cables between Estonia and Finland.

The shadow fleet are vessels with obscure ownership structures meant to conceal their transportation of sanctioned Russian oil and wet cargo since the onset of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
